Sports Portfolio Review

I really like the sports portfolio because I feel like the photos really work well together to tell the whole story or evolution of a sports game or event. First you get pregame, then mostly action shots and then finally a celebratory shot from the end of a winning game. I think the amount of action shots is appropriate because they're all different sports which although all the same type of photo still provides a lot of variety and different perspectives and photo compositions. I think the flow of the photos goes really well together again because they are telling the story of a sports event. I think the captions add to the story, like for the first picture you might not know its a team prayer by just looking at it it could be a time out or something. For the action shots, the captions give you details about the player, the game they had, the score of the game, or even their personal best for a sport like track. I personally wouldn't have done anything different if I was putting together this portfolio, I think the flow and story of a sports event is a really good way to organize this portfolio. Especially when you have just one strong opener and one strong closer. After viewing this portfolio the thing that sticks with me is win or loose sports are a fun time with lots of action and teamwork and bonding. Also the first image sticks with me, I think its very emotional and powerful and a strong way to start off the portfolio, starting with the best is a good way to start.

Archietecture Preview 2

SURROUNDINGS
I think this photo does a really good job of showing surroundings because it obviously features the building with rule of thirds but then uses its surroundings to create a leading line straight to the building. I also think the contrast of blues does a really good job of framing the building with the clouds.

ANGLES AND SHAPES
I think this photo uses a nice worms eye angle to highlight the twisting of the building and the crossing of the clouds creates a nice shape in the clouds. I think the angle and light of this photo also creates lots of lit up rectangles in the windows as well as triangles with the twisty rods.
PATTERNThis photo has lots of repeating rods which create both nice horizontal and diagonal line patterns. On the side of the building we also have repeating rectangles and in the front repeating color patterns which are more obvious from this angle.

LIGHT
I think this photo uses light to highlight the angles and twisting of the building. The light also creates a dark blue sky and orange glow on the building which creates complementary colors. The shadows at the bottom also emphasize this.

 DETAILS
With this close up angle we can see the details of the white rods and you can really see the pure white color which against the light blue sky really pops. This photo also uses its angle to create a 90 angle that's bisected by this middle line and then these horizontal lines connect everything.

Architecture Preview

1. It was built by Javier Senosiain.
2. Built in 2006.
3. It is located in Mexico near Mexico city.
4. You can not visit it because it is a house someone lives there.
5.$218,000
6. This house was created because the architect wanted to bring aquatic life into architecture. It's a recent building, and a house so it doesn't really have any history.
7. I picked this building because I think the shape of it is really unique and something you don't typically see in houses. It reminds me of a genie lamp and I think the stain glass mosaic kind of thing really brightens it up and makes you look at it and think maybe a gnome lives there but then you realize its a house. I think the pathway up provides a nice leading line entrance to the building that enhances the way you first see it. I think the white fluff part of the house looks like a toasted marshmallow and looks really nice and toasted next to the bright rainbow color of the front. It adds a nice contrast to the whole house and I think its a cool building.

1. Who is the architect (the person who built it)?    Antoni Gaudí, Josep Maria Jujol
2. When was it built?   1906-1912  3. Where is it located?   Barcelona Spain
4. Is it a private building or can you visit it? Yes you can visit it.
5. Is there information on how much it cost to build?  Can not find it.
6. Why was the building created? and/or What is interesting or noteworthy about
the history of the building? What is the most significant event (or events) that occurred there?  It is a world heritage site.  At the time it was a controversial building because of the undulating stone facade and twisting wrought iron balconies and windows.

7. Why did you pick this building? (write at least a paragraph on this question)  I like this building because of the interesting line work and shapes on the outside. Instead of being a normal straight line its got curves and dents and wiggles which creates a dynamic feel when you look at it almost uneasy. Its size also creates drama like I'm sure in 1906 this was a pretty big building and because its so unusual people didn't necessarily have a normal reaction to it like they would to some normal apartment building. I like it because its different and unusual.

1. Who is the architect (the person who built it)? Nicholas Grimshaw
2. When was it built? Started in 2000 opened in 2003
3. Where is it located? Cornwall, United Kingdom
4. Is it a private building or can you visit it? yes you can visit it.
5. Is there information on how much it cost to build? can not find it.
6. Why was the building created? and/or What is interesting or noteworthy about
the history of the building? What is the most significant event (or events) that occurred there? It was built to be a visitor attraction and is actually small like biome spheres that have plants from all different climates inside. It's entirely plastic cells supported by metal rods.
7. Why did you pick this building? (write at least a paragraph on this question) I think this building is really cool because like I said in the last question its not made of concrete or metal, its made of plastic. I also think its cool that people decided to create natural biomes to house thousands of kinds of plants. I think its a creative idea and the building looks like huge golf balls. I think for what it is the design of the building really reflects it and makes people want to come see it.

1. Who is the architect (the person who built it)? Santiago Calatrava
2. When was it built? construction started in 2001
3. Where is it located? Malmo, Sweden
4. Is it a private building or can you visit it? Yes you can visit it
5. Is there information on how much it cost to build? can not find it.
6. Why was the building created? and/or What is interesting or noteworthy about
the history of the building? What is the most significant event (or events) that occurred there? It's a futuristic and residential skyscraper and is also the tallest building in sweden.
7. Why did you pick this building? (write at least a paragraph on this question) I really like the shape of this building, the twisting makes it so much more interesting. I think it has a very dynamic feel because to add to the twisting it has these diagonal rods add another twisting aspect to make it even more intense. I think the windows really pop out when the sky is reflected in them, the blue really stands out against this mute neutral color. I like this building because I think you see a lot of straight, very tall skyscrapers that all look the same. This one may appear ordinary at first but once you see it, its totally different from anything you'd typically see.

 1. Who is the architect (the person who built it)? Charles Deaton
2. When was it built? 1963
3. Where is it located?  Genesee Mountain, Colorado
4. Is it a private building or can you visit it?  I think you can visit here but maybe not go inside.

5. Is there information on how much it cost to build? Not sure how much to built but its a 3.1 million dollar home
6. Why was the building created? and/or What is interesting or noteworthy about
the history of the building? What is the most significant event (or events) that occurred there? It is register in the National Register of Historic Places.
7. Why did you pick this building? (write at least a paragraph on this question)
I like this building because of the line and the flow it has. It looks like two separate pieces or two separate chunks but then at the same time connects together through the horizontal lines. I think the cylindrical shape allows the windows to look more futuristic and really cool. I also like the white swooshy thing which I assume is some sort of balcony or patio type area it divides the house and makes it dynamic. I think this house also looks really good with its background like it looks like a nice fire against the snowy cold.

Magazine Planning

1. My magazine will be a summer time fun magazine focusing on fun summer activities, events, food, ways to make a boring summer vacation more fun. Its a general lifetime seasonal magazine targeted at cool moms with a twist that could also be appealing to kids.

2. I think my typical reader is females of around late twenties, thirties and even forties with the exception of children probably teens. I would target this magazine towards urban residents because I think most of the things featured in the magazine would be at urban locations and not really at the disposal of rural residents.

3. My magazine name is THE SUMFLOWER. I think its a good choice because its a pun get it summer and sunflower mixed. I think its bright and appealing to people. Its fun just like summer.

4. The personality of my magazine is fun loving and like if it was a person it would be an extrovert  who loves to go out and make the most of everyday by going on adventures. To create this personality I will focus on color composition and lines to bring out my picture and make it pop and look like something lots of people would like to experience or do in the summertime. I think the face for my magazine would be like a fun teen or a cool mom doing something fun. I think my photo will be a happy Gracie, next to the pool, with a plate of cupcakes.

5. I am not modeling this cover after any I have seen before. But if I did I think it would be like Lifetime or Entertainment magazine will all the stories on the front arranged around the photo, but my photo will not be a portrait close up it will have more depth and background to it but keeping the bright smiles and colors.

6. I think my cover best fits an Image based cover because like it says in the name my cover is based around the main photo.

7. My first cover story will be simple fun ways to enjoy summer without leaving the house like swimming, cooking, or baking. Visually I will show this by having a person look like they're really enjoying doing these things so they appeal to others with bright colors and expressions. To complete this I will probably take my photo and then increase the intensity of the colors to make them pop and maybe brighten it.

My favorite cover

Best Cover and Readers' Choice Winner
Harper's Bazaar
"Rihanna: Killer Fashion," March
Norman Jean Roy, Photographer
"Navigating celebrity can be like swimming with sharks, but for our March cover star, Rihanna, actually took the plunge, submerging herself in a tank filled with three live, eight-foot predators. Our subscriber cover, an homage to the 40th anniversary of Jaws, played off that idea daringly, as Rihanna was captured by photographer Norman Jean Roy reclining in a Chanel swimsuit between the teeth of a stunt shark while the real ones circled as he shot her. It was a killer moment—and a killer cover, which garnered more than 650 million hits online. Click here for the video evidence."

This is my favorite cover. I think this cover communicates that beauty and fashion are bizarre and come in many different forms, some unexpected. I think it shows how the subject isn't just a celebrity she's a real person that sometimes does crazy things maybe out of her comfort zone which I think happens a lot in fashion. All this cover gives you is a killer visual with very little text besides her name and the magazine name which at least for me makes me want to find out exactly what this crazy image is about or what it symbolizes. I think the cover gives off a dangerous kind of for a lack of a better adjective "jaws" mood like I just see Rihanna siting in a sharks mouth, sharks swimming around her with the jaws theme song playing. Its scary but sort of calming at the same time with the intense blue and wave texture.

My top five 2015 Magazine covers

I think this cover is really good because it has a central theme, food, its a food magazine and it features delicious looking food to draw you in. It also has lots of textures and dark areas to make the yellow really pop. Putting the text right in the middle on the only completely visible yolk is a great way to easily show what your magazine is going to feature. Lastly I think the depth of field combined with the font creates a really interesting cover that would make me start to read.

I think this magazine cover is really good because it features its primary subject as the focal point in a way that compliments her background. A secondary focal point is "Call me Caitlyn" which is exactly the subject of the feature. This cover has a color scheme and central theme. The image with the wardrobe and pose creates drama and interest two things a cover should have. The font also goes really well with the photo which I appreciate.

I like this cover because to be honest it's Amy Schumer and she is hilarious. I think the magazine does a really good job of embodying their subject, a hilarious cover for a hilarious celeb. The comedy draws you in and then you decide to read the outsides and see what it's actually about. They use a plain background to emphasize the photo. Lastly they used several colors of fonts to separate ideas and add pops of color to the neutral cover.

I love this cover I think the blue is so intense it would draw anyone in especially with a wild subject like this shark. Once its got you from its bright color scheme and interesting textures you realize what is actually happening in the photo and since there is a lack of text you almost have to get a copy to find out what this is all about. Blue and Yellow are complimentary colors so I think the gold text and her gold outfit compliment the background while connecting to each other at the same time. I also think the texture in the water creates a gradient. So overall this cover is great because of this incredible photo, the comedy/ mystery element and the font. :) It all creates a central idea.

This cover I think has a lot of elements of a good cover. The subject beautifully blends with the background through the depth of field and gradient sunset. The dots in the shorts depth of field compliment the stars in her silhouette. It creates impact with imagery and has a central idea. Lastly of course I like the font, im really picky about my fonts I think the placement of this text also works well for this cover it doesn't take away from the image. I think its just so visually stunning that like everyone would at least stop and look and be like wow thats really cool.

The Four Types of Magazine Covers

Image based magazine are effective because they often give clues to what's inside and feature a public figure or subject  that attracts people to it. Illustration based covers are usually comedic or not serious at least or meant to be inviting not typically on news stands. Type based covers feature mostly works and I personally think are the least effective because most people are attracted to familiar images and aren't going to stop to read a long cover.
Concept based covers create a theme to make the viewer think. They're sort of confusing but suppose to be eye catching.

Five Helpful Magazine Tips

Five things to think about when designing a cover

1. merge the image and the background you want them to go together and not look out of place. it should look nice

2. Experiment with texts and fonts to find one fhat really fits the feel and creates good energy, it should look like it goes with the image and overall vibe.

3. Create impact with imagery. Make sure your cover has energy and isn't boring.

4. Have a central theme. It should all connect and be related to the subject. Create a flow.

5. Don't judge the cover on a screen it could be distorted or not exactly what it would be like in print, A computer isn't
an accurate way to view an item in print.
