PHoto manipulation and ethics

1.A Throughout The United States and The Middle East has recently been a reoccurring problem throughout the journalism world. In the ethics of photos the article says the main rule is do not lie. If you like the trust between journalist and viewer is gone. The code of ethics that has been used around the world was revised and modernized in 2004 to include rules about the digital world. Photo manipulation is not a new thing it's been occurring for centuries and although not always viewed as unethical, darkening someone's skin color is definitely not okay just to present them as"menacing". It is often used in politics to favor a candidate or party. By Presenting someone as more visually pleasing they think it will make them more favorable. The problem will probably not resolve considering we live in a world where the average person with a cell phone could make these kinds of edits.

B. I think this is unethical because people need to see the truth and a raw unedited image shows that. Edits present imformation to a viewer that is just a lie and people don't like to be lied to. The integrity of the photo is lost and the story is portrayed in an unrealistic and unreal way.

2.
A.Unethical by definition means not morally correct. I think this is most unethical photo because they darkened a mans skin color to make him look evil. When in reality he's not a scary looking man. Just because he was an accused killer the magazine wanted people to believe he was guilty, because once you're accused most people assume you're guilty until proven innocent. This is racially unethical too because it's presenting an image that says dark skin is menacing and scary which it isn't.

B.

I think this photo although unethical and wrong is the most ethical among the photos. The others changed the photos in dramtic ways that completely changed the story and made one side look worse than they actually were. This photo just alters her teeth to make her look lower class which I don't think by any standards is okay but is the least offencive of the bunch. I don't think the story was altered too much by the photo. I really don't understand what the point of  this edit was at all.

Photo Challenge 6-- PART 2

This is my friend Eric who had a cool pin so I took his picture. just a fun photo!

This photo was taken with natural outdoor lighting in sunny daylight. The light is coming from over the subjects shoulder creating a shadow in front of her . I chose this background because I think it creates a really simple but textured background. The pose interacts with both the background and the foreground which in this photo is just the ground. The photo is very one tone so the bright colored shirt pops out. The light also brightens her face. Also her paints create lines through the bottom half of the photo. ISO 25 f/2.2

For this photo I chose a background with a round leading line and shadows on the ground that create a nice earthy pattern. The tree shadow kind of gives her deer antlers and connects her to nature. I chose an above angle to shake it up and present a new side of my subject. The light is coming from behind her head and is again a natural sun light. it's found lighting because it's natural and not artificial. I like the line her body creates , this diagonal brings you through the photo. ISO 25 f/2.2

My last photo where I chose a background with dynamic leading lines created by steps, the grass patch and shadows. The steps also create depth which adds to the background. I chose this pose because it's not right at the camera and its not a boring sitting position. Her legs are crossed and shes not sitting up right normally. The angle I chose is mostly straight on and not very interesting but I think it works for this photo. I think the subject looking in the opposite direction of the lines creates contrast in the photo. The only thing I would like to content aware out would be the back tree and shadow. ISO 25 f/2.2

Photo challenge 6 PART ONE

PART ONE

PHOTOS BY EVE ARNOLD

These three photos are all from the same black and white collection by Eve Arnold. This photo features natural light found inside this room which I think is really enhanced by the contrast of black and white. The legs of the dancers create sharp lines across the photo, that creates a sense of movement and balance because the dancers are literally balancing. Arnold used rule of odds in her photo by showing three dancers. I really love this photo because of how raw it is and the resting dancer gives you a sense of their hard work and how its not easy to dance and look pretty all the time. It's hard work that requires time to breathe. I think this photo really captures them in a natural state not posing or trying hard to look good.

This photo uses soft found lighting sort of to the side but not too harsh. Her hat creates diagonal lines and so does the wallpaper. Her pose is twisted towards the camera but she's still looking away as the man in the back faces her. It tells a story, about what exactly I don't know but it does. Her pose resembles the legs of the table she's sitting on. The lighting creates almost a color blocked rule of thirds. One third is light the other two are dark. I really like how her facial expression conveys her raw emotions of contemplation and deep thought, thinking about her life and possibly the man behind her.

This photo has a strong use of rule of thirds placing the subject in the front third of the photo. I think the light is coming from the upper left side of the subject and casting down across her face the the right half of the photo. The light almost creates a spotlight for her like a blanket of light surrounding her. This photo creates a lot of questions about the subject. Why is she wearing a newspaper(?) hat? Why is she sitting in a metal chair in the bathroom? What is she thinking about? Where is she? The lighting and background create a story for the subject and open it up for the viewer to interpret. She's not looking at the camera, so what is she looking at? We don't know. Is she just thinking? The lighting, background and straight on although slightly crooked angle creates a personality for her. And I think that's what a good portrait does.

View and Respond

The six photographers were all led to believe this one man basically led 6 different lives. They thought this because this is what they were told. Because of the description they were given they interpreted the person differently through their photograph. The point of the video makes is the photographer is in control of how the viewer portrays the subject. they change the view through lighting and angles they choose. I agree with this point. The things you're told about people definitely impact the way you view them and the way you present them to others.

read and respond

I think this image has a really powerful leading line that draws you through the entire image to really see what is happening with the plane. All the vertical and horizontal lines add a dynamic feel and a strong feeling of balance and parallelism. The lighting is really bright and in black and white there's a lot of contrast making it an interesting image to view. The angle and position of the camera creates an informal kind of balance one side is black and the other is white. The photo is backlit which creates a silhouette. A primary composition element in this is framing the poles frame the plane right in the center.
