Distinguishing Great Photojournalism from the merely good

My personal favorite photo from the first photographer was the little boy behind the barbed wire at a refuge camp in Thailand. I really liked this picture because it showed the type of situations that even young children had to endure. You can really see his emotions coming out threw the photo and see how miserable he looks. Then after reading the caption it really just fully explains to you the missing information or the why to his misery which I think is incredible to get across in a photograph. The runner up for this photographer for me was all the children straggled in the streets. You can see state they are in, how their clothes are ripped and their skin is covered in dirt. They almost appear lost and separate from their parents which to me is devastating and brings out emotions inside of the person looking at the image. The photo really tells a story which is what great photojournalism does.

My personal favorite photo from the second photographer was the three men running away from Hurricane Georges to seek shelter because theirs is being blown away. You can see in their faces the distress and how hard they are fighting to escape the storm. I also think the captured image of the house blowing away is very interesting to see because unless your their you really cant see how awful the things a hurricane is going to these people businesses and homes. The runner up for this photographer for me was the couple cuddling in an emergency shelter during a tornado outbreak during Hurricane Danny. You can beautifully see how this couple is using each others company to make the best out a scary situation.

What is photojournalism?

Journalism is writing and telling a story. Photography is taking pictures. Photojournalism is taking pictures that tell a story. The difference between photography and photojournalism is that photojournalism captures verbs. They use their pictures to explain events and tell the stories of interesting people. Being a photojournalist can be very exciting. You get to meet all kinds of people and travel the world telling their stories to others. A really exceptional journalist cares about the people they're talking about and the world we live in. A really great journalist can take any topic even a simple one and create an interesting story that will appeal to everyones interests.
